About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to pay back - with interest - all the kindness and generosity we we offered by CSers when our family traveled for 9 months

ABOUT ME

we are a family of 4 with kids aged 15 and 18. we think hospitality matters and we like to share our home, our stories, our good fortune.

we have urban sensibilities and rural skills. we're straight but not narrow. we're not as serious as we look. I guess that makes us stereotypical Canadians!

in 2009-2010 we took a "gap year" from work and school to travel around the Americas exploring with our growing kids. we used Couchsurfing to find hosts in Canada, the USA, Mexico and Belize - what a wonderful experience! we're happy to pay back all the hospitality that our hosts showed us on our travels.

tourists? no. travelers? yes.

PHILOSOPHY

life is short - participate. try everything twice. make metaphorical lemonade. simplify. pay it forward. walk lightly. we're all in this together.

"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." - Gandhi

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

we love talk it up - this is a great service!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

we spent an entire school year on the road (Sept. 09 - June 10), staying with CSers most of the time. it was a fabulous gap year. we had amazing experiences and made life-long friends.

before joining Couchsurfing, we hosted countless travellers over the years - from neighbours who camped at the riverside for the weekend to Canada World Youth exchange participants from as far away as Thailand who lived with us for months. mostly we've hosted musicians and film-makers. lots and lots of musicians and film-makers.

Interests

a list of what doesn't interest us would be shorter.

Music, Movies & Books

yes to all of the above - every day.

Teach, Learn, Share

Philly - I spent many years working as a freelance radio host and programmer for the CBC, Canada's national broadcaster. Recently I switched career paths and now work for Grey County where I help to support local farms and food producers - my official title is Economic Development Officer, Local Food.

I'm good at a lot of "old-fashioned" household skills from sewing to canning. I make jewelry, cut hair and make skin care products. having renovated a stone schoolhouse, I also learned to tape drywall, lay tile, finish hardwood floors and do rudimentary stonemasonry. I love cooking, I love to sing and nothing makes me happier than dancing until I drop. I'm a science and enviro-news junkie.

Myke - curates the Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film through the Durham Art Gallery. he has been a farm-hand, run a cafe and has run marathons in NYC and Chicago. Myke has taught courses in "mockumentary" film-making, and has an avid interest in roadside attractions, from drive-ins to mom & pop mini-putt courses to roadside memorials to giant fibreglass objects of all kinds. Myke works as a wrench at out local bike shop 4 days a week.

We met many years ago at a community radio station and together we've renovated 2 houses, kept chickens and ducks and tended large organic gardens. we've helped launch a LETS barter system and volunteered for years at our local Waldorf-inspired community school. we've made rhubarb and dandelion wine in buckets under the stairs, although we'd prefer a shiraz-malbec, given the choice.

Cleo (17) is a visual thinker - she's a great photographer and while she may seem quiet at first, she is a keen observer with a bent sense of humour.

Nathan (14) is a born entertainer and he loves to make people laugh - he has been part of a local aerial circus for the last three years.
