Music, Movies, and Books

Movies that have recently come up: Princess Bride and Dark Crystal (they've got staying power), I <3 Hucakabees, Cry Baby, Tron, Serenity. Lots more I'm sure. Music: Bach and Beethoven help me concentrate, can't work while Stravinsky or Grieg have the floor; got a great classic rock collection, still working on blues, reggae, and folk; Dave Brubeck is the man. My first tattoo was Tolkien's anagram; going through the Dune series again; but really I just read linguistics stuff all the time - Paul Kroeber did some phenomenal work (Ursula LeGuinn's nephew, btw), and there are too many dissertations already written on nominalization.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Probably the most absurd physical challenge I've taken on was 1500 miles of fixed gear bike riding over 10 days, including one 225 mile day. But I attach far more value to the small collection of experiences I've had with the Salish First Nation communities I've been working with for the past 6 years.

Teach, Learn, Share

I've been doing linguistics for about 10 years now, teaching for half that time. If you want to hear about the particular cult of language study I've been indoctrinated in, I'm happy to go on (at length) about it. Very rudimentary skills with keeping bikes on the road, and some tools sitting around to help with that. Oh and bike polo. Probably the most enjoyable activity I engage in, and I will most definitely try my hardest to get you into it too.
I'm a sponge for anything that isn't related to my dissertation, so if you've got something to share I'm all about it.
