To be brave
Hello, I'm Jonathan! I am Australian, living in London. I am very friendly, curious, excitable, talkative!
I work as a researcher in the area of international development and the environment - I passionately believe in building a working life or 'career' that is concerned with the world, so this is what I am trying to do!
I have lived here for 4 years, but this area of work has meant I get to travel to interesting countries in Africa, and Couch Surfing provides an amazing opportunity to see a side of the places I visit, and meet people, who I wouldn't within the confines of my work.
My pop (grandpa) was from Sunderland, a shipping town on the north-east coast of England. He died about 10 years ago. He had quite a hard, sad life, but would always say "'Tis a grand old life!" and "'Tis a funny old world!", with a cup of tea in hand. And he was right.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I am a beginner to couchsurfing! My only experience I can speak of was staying in a communal house in Berlin when I caught up with my brother and his girlfriend in 2009 as they were surfing around Europe. It was a great big, welcoming house, and staying there opened up Berlin in a way that would have been impossible if staying in a hostel. I have not had much opportunity to travel since then, but am really looking forward to surfing while in Uganda this summer.
I love music and dancing and I am in a dance performance group called the Strays - we do swing/lindyhop and jazz performances at parties and other events in London.
I am very interested in all interesting things to do with how the whole mad world works - history, sociology, politics, economics, psychology, science and the environment.
Music, Movies, and Books
Things that make me want to dance: blues, swing, psytrance, funk, soul, techno, jungle, dubstep, dub, reggae, hip hop, deep house.
Things that make me want to sit down: Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Bjork, Sufjan Stevens, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, John Coltrane.
Things I've enjoyed reading most recently: Gabriel Garcia Marquez's '100 Years of Solitude', JM Coetzee's 'Disgrace', and Adam Rothschild's 'The Ghost of King Leopold'.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Seeing the Rift Valley in Uganda and climbing the Rwenzori Mountains.
Spending time with my family again last Christmas - to me that was amazing.
