Une aventure extraordinaire que j'ai vécue

On an early morning of September 2011, we decided to leave everything behind for a while – work, apartment, social life and family -, time for us to travel around the world on our bicycles. We decided to travel east. We had not fixed any schedule or itinerary… Guided by the envy of biking from Brussels (Belgium), our hometown to however far our legs and the adventure will let us go.

Why head out on a bicycle?

For many years we have both been used to cycle in our city in every-day life. We just love it because it is easy, quick, and eco friendly.
Traveling on a bicycle is a good compromise between using a car and walking. The car is just too fast: you are simply crossing a country. Meeting people is difficult because you are in a closed environment. Whilst walking could be great, the long and flat distances might seem too long, and carrying everything you might need to be autonomous is very difficult.
Finally, globe-trotting on a bicycle gives you the opportunity to go wherever you want, even when there is no local transport. It also attracts people on your way and gives you many more opportunities to meet and socialize.

No schedule, itinerary or specific goals to achieve

In a “modern western” way of thinking, it seems natural to fix ourselves aims or / and goals to achieve. We agree that it could be a good way to learn things, discover others, and become someone better. Regarding our travels, after having left all our constraints behind, we didn’t want to put a new one upon ourselves. We wanted to be as free as possible in order to leave the window of possibilities open. We are hoping that the people we will meet and the things, which will arrive on our way, will bring their own influence on our travels.
As well, we believe that if you fix yourself a goal – such as a final destination, a number of kilometers, an arrival day, a fixed time laps to travel… - if you finally cannot achieve it, you could develop the feeling that you have failed. When the only goal is to travel, meet and exchange. That may not arrive if rushed by such parameters as mentioned above. When you are tired, money less or other, you can just head back home with good souvenirs and new experiences.
