About Me

Hello everyone! :)
My name is Asta and I'm from a tiny country in the middle of the North Atlantic ocean called the Faroe Islands. Since I'm pretty used to people never having heard about the Faroes, I thought I'd give a small introduction here so you know where I come from. As previously mentioned the Faroe Islands is a tiny country consisting of 18 small islands. (Fun fact: We are not even included on some world maps and we have more sheep than people)
We have been a self-governing country within the Danish realm since 1948, however, today there is an ongoing debate on whether or not to remain in the kingdom of Denmark because an increasing number of people wish for independence.

I am not a from an English speaking country, but I am fluent in English as well as Faroese (my native language) Danish and Spanish. I have been doing volunteer work in a few different countries since I had my first Workaway experience in Japan, where I volunteered at an English school for children. I have always been very fond of the Japanese culture and language, so I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to experience Japan.
After my stay in Japan, I traveled to America where I also stayed with a Workaway host in Seattle, USA. I felt like my English improved a lot and I experienced a culture that was more different from my own than I expected.

My last volunteer experience was in Colombia and it has become my second home. This time I didn't travel with Workaway, but with AFS, which is a non-profit organization as well. I spent a year living with a host family while I volunteered at an orphanage in the city. I learned all the Spanish I know from my time in South America and I still remain very close to my host family there.

When I was younger I worked at a horseback riding school, where the work mainly consisted of teaching people how to ride horses properly, as well as taking tourists from all around the world through the Faroese nature on horseback.

When I got older I started an apprenticeship in the largest insurance company in the country and thus I have a degree relating to banking, insurance and pension. I worked there for several years before I decided to start my bachelor degree in Denmark. I am currently studying International Business and Communication in Aalborg University in Denmark, and I am hoping to take a semester in London, as it is one of my favorite cities in the world.

I'm generally a happy and calm person. I am a responsible, outgoing and understanding person and I love to learn new things. I also enjoy things like reading, horseback riding, going for long walks (I walk pretty much everywhere I need to go), watching movies, especially psychological movies, and hanging out with my friends. I go to the gym most days to keep myself healthy and I take my school very seriously. Needless to say I love traveling and experiencing new cultures, but I still haven't been to nearly as many countries as I wish I had.

I used to be very shy, and a volunteering experience would never have been possible back then. I decided to try to come out of my shell and I can't describe in words how much that little decision has impacted the course of my life and all the things I have experienced since.
