About Me

Hello! I'm Alex, I'm 22 and I've just finished university. I quit my job, booked a one-way ticket to Colombia, and now I just thought I'd see what happens!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The first time I used couchsurfing was on my gap year in Mexico and I had such a great experience - probably my best travel experience ever - so I've been very enthusiastic about it since. :) I love to use it to meet locals because you learn so much more about a place when you make friends with someone from there.

Interests

I studied linguistics at uni so I'm very passionate about languages! However I can only speak English and Spanish to any passable degree :^( That said, I love learning about local words, pronunciations and sayings and I'm always open to learn something new from the people I meet.

I'm a terrible dancer but I love it so much! Not afraid to act a fool and bust it out when I hear the music that I love.

I obviously like to travel too!! I love visiting natural sites and architecture the most but I'm pretty much open to anything!

Music, Movies, and Books

Music:
- LATIN MUSIC babeyyy – especially cumbia :^)
- Trashy pop
- Music in languages other than English
- Anything you can dance to

Books:
- I've been trying to get through the major Latin American classics (García Márquez, Allende, Coelho, etc.) and I've loved pretty much everything I've read but I think my favourite Latin American novel is Como Agua para Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
- I've really gotten into history lately so I'll pretty much read anything on Latin American or Asian history. I really enjoyed the Érase Una Vez México series. Definitely keen to read up on Colombian history when I get there too!!
- I'll read anything if it's in Spanish or Chinese b/c it makes me feel smart + productive :^)

Movies:
Don't really have a favourite genre of movies – I'm easy to please! But I really love Miyazaki's films and I usually end up liking whatever film I see EXCEPT horror b/c I'm a big baby and can't handle horror at all :^(
Grand Budapest Hotel is another one I really love!! I saw it on a flight once and immediately watched it a second time afterwards because I liked it so much

Teach, Learn, Share

I actually really love teaching Spanish but I can't imagine that would be very useful in Latin America. So, here's a little list of everything that I'd be happy to teach:

- English
- Spanish
- Piano (I can teach you the one song I remember!!! :P)
- My super crappy spoken Mandarin Chinese + how to write chinese characters
- I can teach you the iconic, traditional Australian folkloric dance: the Nutbush by Tina Turner

I love talking and learning about the history and politics of the country I'm in too! I know they're not technically something I can teach but I'm always down to chat and learn more about those things

What I Can Share with Hosts

More than anything I hope that I can share my happiness and excitement with my host! I enjoy traveling so much and I think I express this through singing, dancing, telling stories to new friends, etc. I hope that in general my host has just as much of a positive experience as I do when I use couchsurfing.

---

My mum really likes travelling so when she's not at home I can offer the house to other couchsurfers! It's kind of an old house and a little far from the centre of Sydney but you can get there in about 40 minutes on public transport and about 20 minutes by uber. We've got an extra bedroom and bathroom so you're free to have those! :)
