About Me

I'm a warm, open-minded, curious, social justicey type, who loves meeting people and going on new adventures.

I've been lucky to have travelled a lot and what I enjoy is meeting new people - the memories of people remain much longer than mosques/churches/ruins. Couchsurfing has lead to dozens of these experiences for me and is such a huge part of why I continue to love travelling.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've surfed couches since I was 18, in around 40 countries (through global freeloaders before I heard about CS, and also outside of the CS network) and couldn't imagine travelling any other way. It may sound corny but I honestly cannot imagine my life without CS - the experiences I've had and the people I've met have had a profound influence on many of the major decisions I've made.

I've surfed across the US, Western and Eastern Europe, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Pakistan, India, South East Asia, Australia and Turkey. Have hosted in Australia, Pakistan and Turkey.

Music, Movies, and Books

The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, Khalil Gibran - especially his writings on pain, which have helped me deal with several deaths of loved ones.
I love this speech by Ursula K Le Guinn http://www.nucalc.com/ron/Mills.html (from the book "Dancing at the Edge of the World: Thoughts on Words, Women, Places")

A quote from it -
"Because you are human beings you are going to meet failure. You are going to meet disappointment, injustice, betrayal, and irreparable loss. You will find you're weak where you thought yourself strong. You'll work for possessions and then find they possess you. You will find yourself - as I know you already have - in dark places, alone, and afraid.

What I hope for you, for all my sisters and daughters, brothers and sons, is that you will be able to live there, in the dark place. To live in the place that our rationalizing culture of success denies, calling it a place of exile, uninhabitable, foreign.

...What hope we have lies there. Not in the sky full of orbiting spy-eyes and weaponry, but in the earth we have looked down upon. Not from above, but from below. Not in the light that blinds, but in the dark that nourished, where human beings grow human souls."

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The opium and gun bazaar on the Afghan border was pretty surreal.

I once stayed on a remote island off the East African coast with 20 inhabitants...the closest I've ever come to being on a 'desert island', it had powder-white sand and crystal water...like Thailand's Phi Phi but zero tourists!
