COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I'm a newbie to couchsurfing =) Nov. 7, 2008 (day 1...fill out my profile)...So far I haven't gone to stay with anyone on CS.com and haven't had anyone stay with me...but I am really looking forward to my first experience!!

Outside of the world of CS.com...I love visitors! I love to show new friends around, send them off with a full belly, and a wonderfully fun experience. I work in the music world, so mostly I end up taking care of traveling musicians who wonder through town on the road. Music and Photography will always have my heart.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Sometimes the journey is more important than the destination....

It was Jan 1st 2000 and I was headed to Cape May, NJ to find my biological grandparents. You see, KT Moon wasn't always my name. I was born Tamera Lee Hess, I would have been a Tami. =)

My biological mother (Laura) was 21 when she had me. Deciding that she was too young to raise a child, she gave me to my biological grandparents to raise. A year later, she returned and decided that they were too old to raise me (or so the story goes)...so she drove me across the country and gave me up for adoption in Indianapolis. I didn't know at the time, but at 1 and a month, I had just been given to 2 of the most inspiring people that I would ever know! Sharon and Leland Moon.

Fast forward 18 years...and after sitting through a Latin American culture class and being asked to write a dissertation on my ethnicity that eventually would go something like this... "not knowing my ethnicity, has become my ethnicity", I finally sat down in my dorm room freshman year at IU to write my first letter to my biological grandparents. Without a reply, I set out to drive....

Still on an emotional high from seeing the ball drop over Times Square (New Years 2000)...walking the streets of Montreal, Canada...seeing the hospital that I was born in (Atlantic City, NJ)...and climbing Whiteface Mountain (upstate New York)...my friend and I pulled into a gas station in Cape May.

"Do you know the Hess's?", I asked the woman behind the counter. "Oh yes, lovely couple. They own a motor lodge right off the strip, Colton Court. They were just in here 10 minutes ago", she replied. I now understand what they mean, when someone says..."my heart skipped a beat". =) lol.

It wasn't hard to find the motor lodge, their house attached to it, or the front door. My friend left me on a park bench across the street so I could decide what I wanted to do.

There are some moments in your life that you will always remember every single aspect of the experience. I remember the smell of salt in the air, the cool breeze that caressed my cheek, the sand that crunched between my feet and the boardwalk, the way the ocean swayed before me, feeling the presence of my grandparents door behind me, the faces of older men and women as they walked by, wondering if someone would recognize me and come running up, and thinking about my parents and life at home. Most of all though, I remember this unexplainable feeling of deep peace and understanding that came over me as I looked out on the ocean that day and heard the seagulls calling from above.

That same sense of peace, drove me all the way back home and was still with me when I walked into the house I grew up in...I told my parents that I loved them and I have never looked back.

When my friends asked later..."how could you stand on their doorstep and never ring the bell?"...I would always reply..."sometimes the journey is more important the destination". This was the first trip that I ever took by myself...my journey to home. =)

Later I would write this....
---------------------

LETTERS TO YOU

Letters to you -- The ones I never knew -- And without a reply -- I set out to drive.

The journey, my lesson
To find the connection
It's how we discover
The meaning of home

Your lighthouse it guides -- to your subtle divides -- and I gaze on the view -- tomorrow you'll wake up to --

The sun sets this chapter -- calling end to day -- and with your cool breeze guiding -- one last time I shall say...

How does she smile
And how does he laugh
Are there others like me
Or was I simply the last
Do I dance through your dreams
All forgotten it seems
Do I burn through your heart --
God where do I start

Your face upon the masses -- Your voice fades in it's stare -- The ghost of our past resting -- Peace, calls the air.

So I sing to the sea -- This time I am free -- Eternal growth on this shore -- to my back, turns your door -- peace found in knowing...I don't need this anymore.

The journey, my lesson
To find the connection
It's how I discovered
The meaning of home
