Hi Dunja, the meaning of "really cheap" in Switzerland is probably a bit different than you imagine :) but I stayed twice in BackPack Hostel and it was really ok. I payed 25 Fr. /night which is very cheap here, cool thing is also that you get free ticket for local transport for every day you stay in the hostel. Actually you may try to find some host there. I could host you or even a few people without any problem but probably i live too far, when do you plan to come? Btw as far as i remember very popular and one of the cheapest hostels is YMCA, you can try to look on this one as well.

There is http://www.la-brasserie-du-rhin.com/ It is in France but you can cross the "Passarelle de trois pais" and take the tram to Basel. I think that is one of the most cheapest places close to Basel.

You'll get cheaper option in France, with airbnb or hotels, at Saint-Louis, on the suburbs of Basel and at Mulhouse, linked to Basel by 20 minutes train.

On the German site (Weil am Rhein) it's cheaper. And it's connected.
