Hallo peeps! I'm planning a roadtrip for this summer, and I'm looking for inspiration for the itinerary. See details ;)

As mentioned, le grand tour de Germany > France > Switzerland > Austria > Czech Republic > and back up north.. This post is only about the Saarland/Black Forest (DE) and Lorraine/Alsace (FR) regions. Please have a look at the following pic to see the itinerary that I thought of, so far: http://imgur.com/a/xbmlw

I'll be moving by car, carrying a bike. I'm looking for scenic routes, hiking areas, memorable sights. I don't mind history/technical museums, but I'm not really into folklore or arts.

The (flexible) idea, so far, is as follow:

  • Coming from the north, drive through the start of the Mosel Weinstrasse (if coming from Koblenz), or the Rhengau area (if coming from Mainz).

  • Pass through the fortified village of Rodemack, in Lorraine (FR)

  • Verdun, learn about the history aspect + World centre for Peace, Liberty and Human Rights

  • Backtracking a bit, pass through Metz, for its cathedral and castle

  • Still moving east, a visit to Völklinger Hütte

  • North Alsace, Regional Natural Park of Vosges du Nord

  • Back to DE, Baden-Baden, and a section of the Badische Weinstrasse

  • at the height of Durbach and the Kinzig Valley, leave DE for good and move towards Le Struthof, a concentration camp in north Alsace

  • Move south through the Alsace wine road, through Colmar, an eventually into the hearth of Natural Park of the Ballon des Vosges

I'd like to hear your thoughts about this itinerary, and possible gems hidden in its path. I realize it's not an efficient route, but the large detours are due to Verdun, and the wish not to miss (at least a part) of the Badische Weinstrasse.

Thoughts? :)
