Intensive Residential Butoh workshop by Rhizome Lee at Tepantor Theatre village,Shantiniketan,West Bengal
About Butoh
Butoh, the 'dance of darkness,' began in Japan in 1959. This is an avant garde dance style, with slow, controlled movement. Butoh was introduced in Japan by dance legend Tatsumi Hijikata, following the Second World War, and the student riots in particular. Roles of authority were now in question, and the avant garde dance movement stemmed from a reaction against the established contemporary dance scene. Inspired by German expressionist dance, it involved taboo topics, absurd backdrops, and was traditionally performed in white body make-up with slow, hyper-controlled motion, with or without an audience.
