Camping or hostel ? Nature or city ?

Hi everyone, My name is Pierre, i am 22, and in September, from 15th to 30th, i come in California. For the moment, i just booked a plane to Los Angeles.

I would like to know your point of view about the best way to discover California. Do you think it is a good idea to rent a car, buy a tent and sleep in a camping on the road? Should I book the different campsites? Or do you think i just should book an hostel in Los Angeles for few days, then take the train for an other town? Santa Barbara for example, which seems to be very peaceful.

I would love to meet local people, take a drink, talk about your way of living, your hobbies, or even share an activity as well :) Also, if someone proposes to host me one night, i would be pleased !

With best greetings from Paris ;)
