Any cs'ers that have an extra room for short term rental? Is craigslist the only web resource to find housing? How realistic is it to live outside the city center and not have a car? After living in Europe for a while the thought of having to buy/use a car sucks.... Do i need my hopes reeled in more towards reality?

Craigslist is probably your best bet for housing unfortunately, I don't live there but that's how I found my apartments. It's hit or miss. If you're planning to visit you can live outside the city center and take ubers around, but there's not great public transportation if you're planning on doing that for an extended period of time. It's really just a bus system that isn't super efficient/extensive from what I hear, but i could be wrong. If you live in the West End you can pretty much walk to everywhere that you'll need to. But if you just want to live in the Maine woods without doing much you can certainly live outside the city without a car! Depends what you're planning to do I guess. Portland's a great city, better in the summer though, enjoy!

I just moved here and bought a bike instead of a car. I was also living overseas (where there's fantastic public transportation) and was crushed to find it a little (extremely) lacking, especially around my place. So far, my bike's been alright to get me from my house (S. Portland) to places in the near vicinity, but I've been relying heavily on my sister who has a car and can drive us to farther places. No car means orienting your life around places you can access easily without one, so anywhere I work has to be close enough that I'll be willing to bike there in the winter. That's been my process anyways!
