Hi Victoria, from Milan you can travel to Lake Maggiore from Cadorna Station Treni Nord and arrive in Laveno, I live close to Laveno and could host you, please let me know the exact date you intend to come to the lake, would love to show you around.

you could take a train from Milano centrale to Arona and then Stresa
http://www.trenord.it/en/timetable/timetable.aspx Those are beautiful towns, from stresa you could take the cable car and go up the mountains Mottarone and enjoy a beautiful view of the lake http://www.stresa-mottarone.it/ On the other hand you you stay on the other side of the lake you could visit the castle at Angera http://www.isoleborromee.it/eng/angera.html or you could visit the islands in the lake, there are many beautiful sceneries to see. You must visit Stresa, Baveno and Arona; also, if you have time you should consider Orta which is not by the Lake Maggiore but Lake Orta (not that far). Best way to get these places: by train. From Milan Central Station trains leaving for Domodossola (calling at Stresa, Baveno and Arona). To Orta is more complicated but still feasible. Enjoy E.

Hi Victoria,

I lived for almost four years in Locarno, a very nice place that is near the Lake Maggiore, and I also know Ascona.

So, Locarno it's very beautiful to visit in March, even it's very quiet during this period (the touristic season usually begins at the end of March), but personally I really loved the Piazza Grande (every Thursday here there's a small market with local products), the old City (Città Vecchia) with its shops, the street near the Lake, the indoor swimming pool with the salt beauty&spa and the Moon&Stars Walk of Fame.

A shop that I really liked it's "La Casa del Tè" (The House of Tea), the Pardo Bar and the Govinda, an Indian restaurant that is very cheap but also good.

Ascona is more touristic but, personally, I didn't see a lot, but the street near the lake (the Lungolago) is very beautiful and, when I go on holiday by my friend during the summer, at least two times we go here.

Finally, if you have a little time and you want to see something of different, I suggest you to take the Centovallina Train from the Fart Railwaystation (it's under the Locarno Railwaystation) and to go in Intragna. It's one of most beautiful small towns of the Centovalli and, in the center of the village, there's also the highest belltower of the Canton Ticino :). In Intragna you can find a small pastry shop, that is enough good, a touristic office with local products and the restaurant Campanile where they sell homemade sauces for the pasta.
