Hi Itai, If you could specify what kind of instruments you are looking for specifically it would help.

Also, be advised that a lot of handmade local instruments are made of untreated wood, and these are usually not allowed out of the country as raw wood poses an environmental hazard to other ecosystems. Any wood-based instrument that you try to take home with you will have to be treated first. The same goes for raw hide/leathers which you often find in African drums.

It has to be treated, otherwise it is disallowed by customs. Cheers, Ani

Hi Pumulani and Ani, Thanks for your response and the tips.

I am interested in small percussions (shakers, kalimba....) and maybe also a marimba. I have a couple of Djembe already so I don't need any more :)

basically, anything that make noise, can go in a suitcase, animal free, and is legal !

I've seen some stuff at the markets outside Pretoria Zoo. Note sure about the quality but its worth a look
