Hi there.
If I can give you an exame a loaf of bread here in South Africa is about 3.25real and a litre of milk is about 2.85real. Depending where you want to live in Pretoria a house with 4 bedrooms will cost between 201900real and 950118real. These are just rough estamates though.
Pretoria is an affordable city to live in if you don't live in the rich areas.
Cheap accommodation + water + electricity: R4000 Groceries (food/toiletries): R1200 Transport: R400/month (depending what you use. I use a motorbike to commute to varsity) Total: R5600 = 415 USD
Extremely affordable and cheap for foreigners . In europe u can by one baguette for a euro , here for that same prices u can get a can of coke, pastry pie and lil chocolate.
Depends on the area you want to stay in really. You can stay really cheap, middle class or expensive. The amounts made by Jacques van der Westhuizen is a bit too cheap in my opinion. Not sure where you will stay for those amounts. And not sure what you eat for R1200 for a whole month plus toiletries?
Hi Rafael. Johnny has a point. You might not make it with R1200. If you do, you won't eat a lot of meat and McDonalds, and maybe you'll live on 2-minute noodles. But I believe it's possible (for students perhaps). As for accommodation. I'm also referring to student accommodation in Hatfield. I have actually seen accommodation for less than R4000. Again, this is student accommodation. So very cheap and not much room for you to throw your frisbee. But like Johnny said, it really depends on the area and what you are prepared to settle with in terms of space and extras like Wi-Fi.
If you have a thousand US dollars you can live like a king basically.
If you have 2000 real you can live quite comfortable. I lived in Pretoria Brooklyn which is a really good area to live in a while ago and payed about 500 real for cleaning services, swimming pool, electricity, shared bathroom & kitchen, parking.
My sister-in-law from Brasil said that food is a bit more expensive in South Africa than Brasil (santa catarina) but further on still very cheap.
Hope this helps
this is a great tool I use, information is updated by users and it is relatively up to date: http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Brazil&country2=South+Africa&city1=Brasilia&city2=Pretoria
