Sailing in San Diego?

I will be traveling to San Diego the weekend of Oct 9th for my birthday and would love to go whale watching but know little about the hobby. Is San Diego the right place to see whales this time of year? I have seen plenty companies that offer tours but would much rather pay someone with their own sailboat to take me out and show me the ropes (no pun intended). I plan to be living aboard next year and would love any advice or nice conversation.

Hello everyone, I would recommend if you really want to live the experience, travel down to Baja California Mexico, to Laguna San Ignacio, to see not just how they past trough the Pacific Ocean but how the have their babies and play with each other. Is a federal natural protected area and the season begins in December until beginning of April. You will see dozen of them! A really unique expirience.

Big Sur, San Luis Obispo, Baja are all good places to see whales, dolphins, and otters from land or by sea. By sailboat would be exciting.
