Go down Oneidas, take a right at the first "bulletin board sign", and drive until you see a turnaround area. I've seen people parking overnight there once in a while. Not sure it's "legal" but doubt you'll have any issue for a night or two.
This is outside of Tahoe (about 40 minutes), but nice area. Drive out to "Lower Sunset Lake" and you'll see plenty of place to park/camp on the way. General directions: 89 to 89, to Blue Lakes Road, to Sunset Lake Road. Not sure if a permit is required, but there's a bulletin board near the Blue/Sunset intersection that should tell you.
