Yeah, everywhere in TC is expensive. Kingsley is a good idea, the other option is AirbnB.

Interlochen State Park has RV and tent sites. You could camp on private land, or the really adventurous can camp on remote state land for free if you get a permit which you tie to a nearby tree.
