It depends on where your conference is. Best Tourists places are in Zona Sul (Ipanema, leblon, Copacabana, Leme, Botafogo, Flamengo, Largo do Machado, Catete. All of these neighbohoods are in order from the best to "less best" But if it is in Barra da Tijuca u would be a bit farther.

Best neighborhood is zona sul (Copacabana, Leblon, Ipanema, Larangeiras).

It will also depend on your conference.

Botafogo, Ipanema, Laranjeiras... I reccomend you a place next to the subways stations, cause the carnaval will be happening in Rio and everything stop. The streets are very crowded.
