Granada, Andalusien, Spanien
Come celebrate Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Granada, the beating heart of Andalucía. If you've never experienced Semana Santa in Spain, this is one of the best places to do so. Tapas, flamenco, Alhambra, processions and festivities. We'll even try to add some visits to the nearby towns and perhaps some hiking in the Sierra Nevada! Expect it to be incredibly busy, hectic and lots of fun. Preliminary program: 16th of April: - First procession in Granada 18:00: Time to meet up and explore the city! The big procession on this day is Los Gitanos (The Gypsies) and we should be able to catch it around Plaza Isabel Catolica. We’ll see the procession and the crowds, as it (very slowly) makes its way up to Sacromonte, where it terminates at 3:00am. We’ll stop along the way for food and drinks and head up to Sacromonte ourselves, following both the procession and our own decided route. (* Meeting point: Granada Cathedral) 17th of April: - Granada city tour 10:00: We’ll wander around town, stopping at various viewpoints, visiting the Cathedral and seeing the various highlights of the city. According to time, we might include a visit up to Sacromonte and certainly a visit to the Alhamba. We’ll update you soon regarding Alhamba tickets (update: sold out!), which should be bought in advance. (* Meeting point: Granada Cathedral) 14:00: Lunch break, tapas time in Granada and your chance to try some local Andalusian specialties. 24:00: This night ends with a silent procession, at the stroke of midnight the procession will begin from the Iglesia de San Pedro y San Pablo. We’ll walk for a while in complete silence, following the candlelit procession, as we contemplate life and whatnot. Last chance for drinks right after, or else time to go to sleep! 18th of April: - Hiking Los Cahorros 10:30: Easy 10km route from near the city center (bus to starting point), following a gorge and passing multiple hanging bridges. Return loop hike, 3-4hrs walking, bus back. We’ll be able to stop at the town of Monachil for lunch. This event is weather dependent. (* Meeting point: Granada Cathedral) 19:00: Friday is the heart of Granda processions! The processions pass through the city center on this day and we will, once more, make our way through town, following processions and then adding even more food and drinks. We’ll be looking at going to see a flamenco show on this night! 19th of April: - Possible day trip to Guadix/Nerja/Las Alpujarras 10:00: We’ll escape the hustle of the city this Saturday, heading either inland to see the cute town of Guadix and its caves or to visit Nerja, a coastal city by the beach. We’ll decide closer to the event. Our third option is to go see the mountain towns of the Alpujarra and try to incorporate a short hike there. (* Meeting point: Granada Cathedral) 17:30: Back in Granada, only one procession is happening on this day, but it leaves directly from the Alhambra, so we’ll follow that for a while and, as usual, go for food and drinks. As it’s a Saturday night, we’ve got a few more craft beer joints and a couple of cocktail bars on our itinerary. 20th of April: - Daytime processions and visiting what we’ve missed 10:30: Processions start early on this day, so we’ll meet up for breakfast and try to then see our last Semana Santa processions at around noon by the cathedral. One last procession, then lunch and then we’ll go see parts of the city that we haven’t seen yet. That’s the end of our event! (* Meeting point: Granada Cathedral)
