For me it is mostly a way to meet people. Sure you can do that in hostels but I think you instantly feel closer to someone when you see where and how they live, what they've pinned to the wall, what CDs they have or if they are the vinyl records kind of people, even stuff they've brought back from their travels. I love couchsurfing for this opportunity, and to do it with people that have completely different background and culture makes it even more interesting!
