Visiting Belize 30 June - 20 July

As part of my summer in Central and South America, I will be in Belize from 30 June - around 20 July. Would like to travel throughout Belize and absorb the country and people. Need places to surf throughout the country and wise travelers to give me much advice. Please read my profile. I am a great surfer and very helpful

Except for the downtown area around the water taxi and not more than 3 or 4 blocks beyond, you'll probably want to spend as little time as possible right in Belize City; and, unless you;ve got "government business" to do, that isn't much to see and do in Belmopan.

You didn't mention how you're getting to Belize. Just to conserve expenses, I normally take a tourist flight to Cancun, then the bus down to Belize City, or to Chetumal and then a water taxi over to Ambergris Caye. From Ambergris Caye, then to Caye Caulker and on to Belize City. To go across the country, you'll probably want to take the Western Highway to San Ignacio with a deviation south to Caves Branch. If so, i recommend taking the trip into the underground river to see the Mayan ruins and artifacts in the caves.

While I've wanted too, with one exception in Placencia Village, I've never couchsurfed in Belize. With rooms so inexpensive -- especially during the off-season -- I've normally stayed in less than 3-star rooms above bars or hung out with SCUBA divers I've met on dives.

If you're a SCUBA diver, be forwarned. It is a very LONG LONG LONG boat ride out to The Blue Hole; and, once there, there is not a lot to see. There are some really interesting pillars which are the remains of stalagmites from the cave you've entered through the hole in the top that collapsed. That's how The Blue Hole was formed.

With an estimated 400 islands; the world's second longest reef just off shore, and sonates (underwater rivers throughout the Yucatan) there are diving opportunities to satisfy about every interest. I think (?) this is the time of year to see the Whale Sharks around Placencia.
