Is the hop-on hop off tour worth taking

I am planning to come to NYC for 3 days. I will like to see atleast all the things worth seeing from outside (Museums are not top priority). So is it worth buying the hop on-hop off bus pass? If not is it possible to cover all the touristy places by walking around, I am in reasonably good health and dont mind walking 8-10 miles everyday.

It can be, but you will find better value in purchasing a 7-day metrocard.

Even though you will only be here for 3 days, the value of the card will be paid for itself through 10 rides.

Assume that you will be utilizing this at least 4 times a day (2 round trips form your couch to venues) over a period of 3 days a a minimum, and you will be able to get a better value than the hop-on hop-off tours.

You can certainly hit the midtown Manhattan sites in one walking trip as the majority of it is within a 10 square block radius.

You will want the Metrocard to go to places in Brooklyn, Queens, Downtown, up to Harlem or Inwood (Cloisters).

Invest in a Metrocard - Download a PDF version of the subway and bus maps on your phone, and have a good guide book.

I didn't use to be a fan of the tour buses, but having been dragged on a few by my wife I changed my mind. A good way to do a quick tour at your pace for the things you want to spend more time at.

Would also recommend you consider a boat tour... their are many different types & lengths.

It really depends on the bus. Some are terrible, but some are really interesting. The good thing about the bus (as opposed to the Metrocard) is that they take you to all of the top touristy spots. You don't have to spend time figuring out where to go and then how to get there. But if you do choos the bus, make sure you get one with a LIVE tour guide. The recorded tours are the terrible ones.

I am a native NYer who just this week did a hop bus tour in London, Dublin and Amsterdam. ...and will now do it in NYC as well! If it's a nice day, I say GO! ( get the one day pass) I found it to be a great overview of the city with a great perspective. There's not enough time to make all the stops, but you can see what you may want to come back for another day. I only hopped off/on once in each city . I'm not much of a "tour" kinda guy, but I'd definitely do the bus thing in any city.

I take them in every city that I visit ! Some are better than others. It’s a good thing to do the first day for an over view.., then go walk around your fav spots ! Enjoy
