Hello 4 Guys, I would look at Friendship, Bloomfield, Greenfield or other geographic areas close to CMU. Be sure to check your proposed location for use of the bus lines. Public transportation in the city is limited so you would most likely want to use an accessible bus.
David, I am assuming that you're looking for a furnished place with at least 2 bedrooms, and close to CMU, correct? Unfortunately, Pittsburgh doesn't offer a lot in the furnished short-term category, but your best bet would be to look for sublet/subleased apartments on Craigslist. Look here http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/search/sub?query=september&sale_date=- Renting a subleased apartment means that the original tenant has signed a long-term lease (let's say one year), and will be away for a short-term period (weeks or months), and would like to rent his/her apartment to someone else during this time. They usually come furnished and more flexible on the dates. If you tell me about the exact dates and your budget, I will be more than happy to help you look :) I'll send you a private message with my email to communicate. Good luck!
You can also look at Shadyside Inn, which is technically walking distance to CMU, but it is also on 5th avenue (many bus routes), is furnished, and is available for 6 weeks.
too expensive
Craigslist sublets are definitely a good place to start looking. Ideally you'd want to be within five blocks of a bus that runs every 15-25 minutes during rush hour (Google transit will tell you if that's possible). Sometimes buses only run every hour, which wastes a lot of time when they skip runs (e.g. the 56U bus).
If you'd like to bike to school, check out BikePGH to get a better idea where to live. Also pay attention to the terrain map of Pittsburgh. It's a bit extreme.
Thank you for the suggestions you are helping me a lot ;)
I'd share a tiny apartment with low rent in the college area. Aaron
it all depends on if you have a car greenfield bridge is out of commision
Wow, great recommendations.
Has no-one recommended Squirrel Hill yet? I pick up my daughter every day this summer at Pitt Student Union, and go past the center of CMU on my way to the JCC at Forbes near Murray. Its walkable. We live in Squirrel Hill, tho at the other end from CMU. But, there is a grocery store in town and many nice places to spend as little or as much as you want to get a tasty bite to eat.
I don't know that they will be able to help, but its worth a try; I'll send you private email w/ contact info for the woman who got me into this place. The company is thorough and professional and gets good grades as a business. The way I'd approach is
I used Hotpads.com online and on Android; its got maps of whereare the places and I found it very easy to get where I wanted to be. I'm pretty good at this; I spent 9 years in NYC where finding an apartment is either luck or a well-honed skill, and also spent some time in SFO.
Anyway, good luck!
