Providence is less expensive than most other locations that lie between Boston and New York City - it is a smaller, more manageable city with a comparably smaller arts scene. Rhode Island's population is disproportionately older and less affluent than Boston or New York, but it is perfectly pleasant in its way. Easy access to Amtrak and a good airport, a nice bay that provides plenty of public beaches, and just an hour from Boston - Rhode Island is a nice place to live in my estimation!
