Hey there, I may be moving to the Salt Lake City area and I was wondering if anyone had areas of the city they would recommend. I grew up in NY so I do enjoy diversity, creative/artistic and open minded vibes where I live.
Is Provo nice as well?

Hey there! We live in Millcreek/SLC area and have for years. SLC is a nice place to live. You are close to the mountains and fabulous nature all around! If you love the outdoors, you've come to the right state. If you like diversity and open-minded experience, SLC and Ogden are probably your best choices. Provo is beautiful geographically, although I wouldn't put open-minded vibes in the same sentence as Provo. I say that respectfully, knowing that all individuals are different, but there is an overwhelming cultural vibe vastly different than SLC in every way possible. If you are looking for diverse experiences such as gay rights parades and celebrations and artistic vibes, be in SLC for that. Provo and Orem just got some fame in the news about being 2 of the least diverse cities in the U.S., and I would agree wholeheartedly. I wouldn't live in any other city in Utah other than St. George for the outdoors. We live close to Sugar House, and yes, it is super fun. Millcreek is in the process of building a city center which is also going to absolutely ROCK. We have a fun climbing community in SLC as well. Restaurants are nowhere close to NY, although we have fabulous whole-in-the-wall family owned ethnic restaurants. Are you from NYC or upstate? We have a China town on State Street in SLC that is my go-to place for legit Chinese shopping and eating. I'm so happy SLC got one. Nothing like the China town in NYC, but awesome nonetheless. SLC has a strong Burmese, hispanic, and Somalian population as well. There's more to say, so just message me with any other questions Aine!
Come to 800 s 500 e area, cheap and you get liberty park. So much better than sugar house no offense everyone
I agree with Cruiser, that the Liberty Park are of SLC is so awesome. We lived across from the part for a year and miss it a lot.
Liberty Park has some awesome activities outside of winter. And fun Sunday afternoon culture in the summer.
I'll just throw this out there as someone who moved away and came back craving to live with diversity. I found Glendale, poplar grove, west valley amd Kearns actually have diversity as far as people go. Lol. I grew up in Holladay which is nice but still seems low on the diversity scale. Lol. When I came back 3 years ago, I bought a house in Glendale; there's a uniqueness living here; almost synonymous with the hood. Lol. It fits me well and gives me a chance to keep up with my Spanish. I do also like sugarhouse, though the genfircation valley wide is moving in.... welcome to slc it's a wonderful place.

I have visited and got to check out Sugar House it was a nice fit, but it might be a little pricey for our budget. The areas around Liberty Park look really nice too, I enjoyed the aviary and old rides I liked the vibes around there.
We're still looking around and plan to visit a few more times. I'd love to meet up for a drink or a bike ride when we get into town. Looking forward to getting to know your city :)
Any dog friendly rentals / complexes / condos for suggestion are also welcome as we continue our search, and thanks again for being so helpful.
You might try Fountain View Apartments on F Street. They were dog-friendly but may have changed over the years. I used to live there and loved it. (801) 364-2578

Provo is not Salt Lake and is, imo, not the place to find people with open minds and culture. Anywhere at or near downtown SLC should have what you're looking for.
Wanted to jump on this bandwagon a few months delayed to say that I'm also planning to move to SLC from NY pretty soon. I'm grateful for all this advice on neighborhoods & places to live!
