Puglia is not just orecchiette, masserie and beautiful beaches: there are important archaeological sites, castles, museums, churches and much more. In short, there is a fascinating world just a few kilometres from home that the residents themselves often don't know or tend to overlook. This Sunday I'd like to visit Brindisi and try to bring together locals, expats, tourists — anyone who feels like exploring with curiosity and a spirit of sharing. If it goes well, I might organise more events in the future. Brindisi is a historic port city in Puglia, the smallest provincial capital in the region, known as the "Gateway to the East" for its strategic position on the Adriatic Sea. With a natural harbour shaped like a deer's head, it offers a rich blend of Messapian and Roman history. It is the final stop of the Via Appia and the Via Appia Traiana. Day Programme in Brindisi 8:30 – 8:45 | Meet at Bari Centrale station 9:02 – 10:25 | Departure Regional train Bari–Brindisi 10:30 – 12:00 | Roman Roots and Panoramic Views From the station, a short walk along Corso Umberto I leads to the heart of the city. The first stop is the scenic Roman Columns, symbol of Brindisi and the endpoint of the ancient Via Appia. From this elevated position, there is a panoramic view over the natural harbour. A few steps away lies Piazza Duomo, where you can admire the Cathedral and the historic buildings surrounding it. 12:00 – 13:30 | History and Archaeology Also in Piazza Duomo, a visit to the Francesco Ribezzo Archaeological Museum is highly recommended (free admission). The museum houses the celebrated bronzes of Punta del Serrone and numerous finds attesting to the city's strategic importance in classical antiquity. 13:30 – 15:30 | Lunch Break 15:30 – 17:30 | The Waterfront and the Fortifications The afternoon continues with a walk along Lungomare Regina Margherita. From here you can take in the Castello Svevo (now home to the Italian Navy) and continue towards the outer harbour to see the Castello Alfonsino (Forte a Mare), located on the island of Sant'Andrea. 17:30 – 18:15 | Return to Brindisi station Walk back to the station through the main streets, with the option of a short stop for a coffee or some shopping. 18:32 – 19:54 | Return journey Regional train Brindisi–Bari DISCLAIMER Each participant is solely and entirely responsible for themselves throughout the trip.
