Just avoid some places that are known to local as vulnerable and you'll be fine.

I have lived in Chittagong for half a year now and been on many trips around the country. I have never felt unsafe in Bangladesh as a Caucasian foreigner (except for when you get a crazy bus driver once in a while). You are probably referring to the hatals (violent strikes) that happened earlier this year when you are worried about the safety of Dhaka - it is over now. I've been to Dhaka three times during the last two months and there haven't been any problems whatsoever.

The only issue with backpacking in Bangladesh these days is that the government won't allow any foreigners to the Chittagong Hill Tracts due to local politics there (or it is at least very, very difficult to get a permit).

Hi Mark & Stefy, If you want to visit Chittagong Hill area, pls let me know...it need 8/9 days earlier to apply...Just about 5 days ago I took 4 German tourists to Bandarban hills area for a 4 days trip...we can provide arrange permission, guiding too. Thanks
