Please help with Vietnam Laos border crossing!

We are in Dien Bien Phu (Vietnam) and want to cross the border in northern Laos, arriving to Muang Khua. We are looking for a cheap bus to cross the border. Does anyone knows more about it or did it this year? We also thought of hitchhiking but we are afraid that the road is empty. There is only one road, Dien Bien Phu - Muang Khua.

Just in case someone needs Info:

Busses leave from the new bus terminal in Dien Bien Phu, there is no fixed time but you should go around 6 cause most busses leave at 7 / 7:30
to Muang Khua it officialy costs 115 vietnamese don, but as a tourist they will try to charge you 300. We did not have more money and finally paid 150 each (showing the empty wallets).
At the Lao border you have to pay a little fee but it's not a scam, it's official (10 lao kips each). - Some busses go to Udomxay, other even to Luang Prabang. But they can drop you anywhere on the way.
the road was in good conditions but very empty, hitchhiking is not a good idea i think
