Is 4-5 hours enough to visit Montserrat if we are not going to enter the church itself (so avoid a touristic croud)?

Yes, it's perfectly enough.
Nope! 6h min as u would see many paths to take on and 4h to go and come back from there are needed + u would want to enjoy having a beer enjoying the views in one of the cafeterias
If you are not going to hike all the way up, yes. If you are doing the "Sant Jeroni" top, that will take you around 3 to 4 hours round trip just to hike up and down :)
It's enough to visit the surrounding areas and to do a little walk. If you want to visit the church there's no queue. The queue it.s only to see "moreneta" and it.s not so long. You can do both thinks. But not enought time to walk till st. Jeroni
Irina, just in case let me specify something important: usually there are queues to visit the virgin but not to enter to the cathedral. Of course, the virgin is on the cathedral but let's say to see the virgin you're entering from another door and cross a kind of narrow corridor that surrounds all the cathedral.
To enter in the cathedral, you will not find queues and you will find, let's say, reasonably number of tourists (except during the religious services, during this time it's full).
Yes it is enough and even so to visit the church, which I truly recommend! It doesn't tend to be so crowded... even if you do not queue for visiting "La Moreneta" (for which there is usually a bit of queue) I suggest you enter and see.
I would recommend you to spend a whole day there. There is a lot to see and visit. If you do some hiking (like walking to Sant Jeroni) this will probably take you 3-5 hours, but the trip from Barcelona to Montserrat will take you more than an hour. In my opinion, the best think you can do is to go there early in the morning and spend the day there, even after hiking around you can visit de Monestir, which is amazing and you will see our catalan Virgin (Moreneta) which is black. Then you could probably be back to barcelona at the afternoon. To sum up, it's better to spend more time and visit the whole place with no hurries, than takeing a 1 and 1/2 hour trip and leaving without seing everything.
