In late summer I volunteered as a nest watcher for sea turtles in the Tampa Bay area. One night I was checking the nests, but none were expected to hatch. One nest in particular had had a lot of difficulty because ghost crabs had been burrowing into the nest and a raccoon had repeatedly dug into it. When I got to the nest, though, two turtles had already hatched and were walking down the beach, but in the wrong direction! I didn't have clearance to touch the turtles so I had to walk alongside them to provide a barrier that angled them in the right direction. Then, once they were to the sea, I went to the nest to look for more hatchlings. It turns out that all the turtles were trapped because one couldn't get out of the nest and was blocking the path. Thankfully, help came soon and all of the turtles were rescued. All told there were 83 hatchlings that we released that night, a number much higher than anyone had expected!
