I wanted to try this idea out on Couchsurfing for a while now. My plan is to host and introduce travellers to lesser known, less fancier, smaller scale, wine regions and farms outside of the traditional Winelands. On Friday, 28th August 2026, I am visiting the Darling region and visiting some of my favourite farms in the region. The farms are Groote Post and Ormonde in the Groenekloof region. We can end the day having lunch at Ormonde before heading out. The wines blends the cool climate wine from the nearby Atlantic coastline with the strong Mediterranean tannins typical of the Swartland wine region. It is also flower season and a great way to catch the wildflowers and beautiful yellow flowers of the canola fields along the way as well as visit the small town of Darling. It isn’t as scenic and lush as Stellenbosch or Franschhoek just as a warning. Though the farms are scenic in their own right, I would prefer to host people who are interested in trying the wines rather than just coming to visit a beautiful farm in the countryside (you will be sorely disappointed) as it will be more interesting and rewarding if you are planning to try the wine. Also, you will be required to pay for your own tasting and meals. The cost of the wine tasting at Groote Post is about R60 and at Ormonde about R160 for the reserve tastings. I am happy to pick up people, but my car can only fit a maximum of three additional passengers, and this will be a first-come-first serve basis and you can request a lift on the chat below. We can meet at the Eden on Bay Mall (also there is MyCiti Bus Station there for those travelling from town), in Big Bay at 09h15am to 09h30am for those who need a lift. If you have your own vehicle, you are welcome to join and can meet us at the farms (see the links below) or, if you are able to, at Eden on Bay if you want to offer a lift to the others at 09h30am. If you are planning to drive, please be aware that the road to Groote Post from either the R27 and from the R304 is a short gravel/dirt road so drive slowly but it is accessible with high clearance vehicles and normal sedans. I would also recommend travelling from the R27 and accessing Groote Post from the Saxonsea/R304 turn off and avoid going through Atlantis.
