Hello everyone,

I'll be travelling in South Africa between the 5th and the 21st of December. It is my first time there (and first time so far from Europe) so I need a little bit of help. My flight is already booked, I'll go to Johannesburg. Then I want to go to Pretoria and Cape Town, and maybe to the Pongolapoort Nature Reserve. So my question is what is the easiest and cheapest way of travelling? Should I book in advance? Is it safe to pay online? In case you have other tips, I'd be more than glad. Hey Chris Apologies that no-one has answered you yet - CS isn't so big in South Africa! The easiest way of travelling is different in different parts of South Africa. When you land at Johannesburg Airport (O.R. Tambo), take the Gautrain (high speed train) to where you are staying in Johannesburg or Pretoria (these two cities are quite close to each other - about 45 minutes by car or Gautrain. The Gautrain is reasonably cheap, extremely safe and good. It also has a small network within Johannesburg. It also has 3 stops in Pretoria. Getting to Nature Reserves far out of cities is a little more difficult, but there are long-distance buses going almost everywhere. If they have online booking, it is safe to do this. Online booking in the whole of SA is fine. The most popular Reserves might require advance booking. Cape Town is completely different. There is no high-speed train, but in the city there is the My Citi commuter buses and everyone seems to use that. Jo'burg, Pretoria & Cape Town also have municipal buses. We have many Nature Reserves, so I had to look on a map where Pongolapoort is - it's quite far from Jo'burg (450km) - why do you want to go there? If you're happy to go so far, why not go to the Kruger Park instead? There are tours which go to the Kruger Park. Between Jo'burg and Cape Town the best way to travel is with budget airlines - there are a few to choose from: Kulula, Mango and Safair. Ask me more specific questions and I can help you more. Hi Bjarne! Thanks a lof for the tips. I still don't know where I will stay in Joburg, I haven't booked anything in that city yet. And I also might be interested in Pretoria, it seems to be a nice place. (I don't have there much plans either.)

I would suggest booking very soon for Cape Town if you want to go there. Cape Town is VERY popular in December/ January with locals and foreigners. Jo'burg & Pretoria not so much, but you might have to look on Airbnb - as I said, Couchsurfing isn't very big in SA...
