I quit my job and started trusting in my guts and started doing whatever my heart wants me to do. I try different things. CURRENT MISSION A recent article in the Times Of India mentioned that the third highest cause of death in India is suicide. Having made several films on suicide prevention, I know that a small intervention, like phoning a friend, can help prevent taking such a drastic decision. My childhood friend, Russill Paul (a musician and teacher of Vedic studies in USA) and I are setting up an initiative to help people cope with their challenges in life through a series of meditations. We hope through this initiative to save as many lives as possible... In a few years, my quest for a higher purpose and meaning in life led me to the quietude of the Himalayas. My first exposure to volunteering happened here – doing relief work for earthquake victims in 1999. I had to come back to Chennai in early 2000 to care for my ageing parents and started volunteering with local non-profits. I figured the best way I could help these organizations is by doing what I am good at – making films. I also became the guardian of some lovely little children at an orphanage. These kids have now blossomed into beautiful angels, well educated and working in prestigious positions. Many are married and some have children too. While the orphanage shut down, these children are now supporting various non-profits in many different ways! As one of my favourite authors, Daniel Quinn, says in his book–Ishmael: ‘You don’t have to change the world. If you can just transform the lives of 10 people, and inspire them each to transform 10 others, the world will eventually be transformed.' These kids are doing just that, and they definitely have transformed my world!

It is a "family thing" with Gowri (my wife), Kamala (my daughter) and my elderly parents fully involved. We host beyond Couchsurfers. We plan our weekends and travel much in advance.
