one big part of travelling is getting to know ppl. from all over the world. It's not the same staying in a hotel/hostel as sleeping in a "native's" bed/couch ;)

going to Nigeria for half a year (for my masters research) without knowing a soul there...

Of course travelling, reading, sports, anthropology, culture etcetcetcetc.... anything somebody speaks enthusiastically about... ;)
