It's kind of hard to beat. Start off in a city with someone who knows the lay of the land and is friendly. A place to stay is just a part of it.

Blues, soul, bluegrass, rock and roll, etc. Movies: anything that entertains me (Adam Sandler stopped entertaining me after the Waterboy)

Language practice, good stories, simple cooking. And I can answer all your questions about American culture without starting a fight. I have heard that this is actually kind of rare. And the thing that you need to understand is that I'm hilarious. Sometimes I get some complaints because people are all like "Hey man, my sides hurt. You should have told me you were so funny before I invited over, I wasn't prepared to laugh this hard!" and I can only apologize and try to not be as hysterical, which is boring. So now I just warn people in advance.
