While I haven't done it yet, I feel that couchsurfing would be a better way to know an area, its culture and people. Hotels or Hostels usually put you in an environment surrounded by other tourists who are also trying to discover a place. This is not necessarily bad, and its the form of travel I have always done, but I would like to try something new and experience a city differently.
