A 19 year old student, I was walking through the materials lab building at the UCR. Suddenly, I saw a flash of yellow appear above me, only to give way an instant later to a 20 meter gantry crane, hovering above. Seeing a 10 ton piece of steel, moving silently through the air, is something of an interesting experience... Then there was the Limon earthquake of 1991... that's one of those "you had to have been there" moments. Standing there, watching everything move uncontrollably, and being able to do nothing about it, is an experience to remember your whole life.
