What kind of scene are you looking for? Will you be renting or buying? Center square in Albany is around Lark street which has a lot of bars and shops. Troy is becoming really cool... kind of like the brooklyn of the area. Awesome farmers market, great restaurants, interesting shops. A lot of younger people live in those areas. If you want something slightly fancier, saratoga also has a nice downtown area. It might be hard to move there around July/august because of track season though.
Feel free to message me directly if you want to talk about it more. I grew up here and we are around the same age (I'm 27), so I think I'll be able to help you out.
If you're really into rock climbing...Once you get here, you have to take a trip to the gunks. There are some places in lake George and the Adirondacks too! I'm not a big rock climber (I'm a hiker), but I have friends who are.
Thanks for the info Nicole! I'm looking to rent and I'm now looking in the Center Square area.
Super stoked about the climbing up there and I'm also a big fan of hiking. Would be great to meet up for a hike once I'm up and settled in!
If you're trying to stay in close proximity to the city of Albany, but don't want to live in a city, North Greenbush is a suburban area on the opposite site of the Hudson River, but is only 3.5 miles from downtown Albany. There's a ton of appartment complexes, townhomes, plus lots of stores, shops, eateries within easy reach, and bus service and easy access to the train (Amtrak)
If you want more rural, just drive a few miles to the east of there, and you start getting into rural communities.
Thanks Marc!
My vote is for Schenectady, the Woodlawn neighborhood to be specific. Convenient bus service, with rentals as well as homes for sale. We have a small park for the kids , B-ball, sand volleyball or a quiet place to gather with friends under a roof or trees. For a walk consider our preserve with a trail system and pond for fishing. Plenty of places to shop or dine close by to. Our active Neighborhood association would be glad to help you get to know your new neighbors.
Second Center Square for a place in Albany! Or Troy.
If you fit the youngish/single/urban millennial professional mold and you want to walk places, have a central location, etc. your best bets are Center Square or Troy.
If you to buy a house in the suburbs with really good schools, you have a ton of options including Bethlehem (Delmar, Glenmont, Slingerlands), Colonie, Clifton Park and Niskayuna. Guilderland and Latham are close-in as well and nice.
Then there's everything up closer to Saratoga Springs, including Saratoga itself (which has an amazing downtown) and Ballston Spa.
You've got me pegged! I'm looking in Center Square area.
Wherever you want!
