I'm new to the area, but I read that they aren't legal in Asheville. http://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2017/04/24/should-asheville-basement-apartments-legal-tourist-rentals/100840870/
I recommend west asheville! Anywhere off Haywood road between Patton ave (see upcountry brewing) and haywood road/ridgelawn road (see Taco Billy) would put you in walking distance of lord of bars and restaurants and a $7 uber downtown.
all areas in Asheville are nice, West Ash. and downtown are probably the most happening but there are many cools parts of town.
Thanks everyone !!! I'm going for Labor Day Weekend
It does matter where around Asheville you go. Some areas are higher crime, some areas are very expensive, and some areas have limited or no access to public transportation, etc. It also matters a great deal depending on what you'd like to do when here. There's lots of beautiful natural areas to see, such as mountain hikes with panoramic views, whitewater rafting, waterfalls, zipline tours. or local Appalachian arts & crafts. Or there's the downtown city scene, or brewery tours, or the many restaurants. So depending on what you want to do you may wish to select the place you stay to be convenient. So before you select your place to stay, you might want to visit some of the websites about visiting Asheville. I'll give you two: RomanticAsheville.com and https://mountainx.com/guide/best-of-wnc/. There are many others.
AirBnB is legal in Asheville, it's just restricted to someone's primary home. People still get around that though.
Plenty of uber & lyft cars as many folks make main or supplemental income driving since jobs hard to find. If you are along a main artery north of town (Charlotte St., Merrimon Ave) easy to walk to town. Use Mellow Mushroom on Broadway as a starting point to put in your GPS to check out if the Airbnb is close enough for walking. Also, West Asheville has its own culture and many hangout spots, and most streets right off Haywood afford easy enough walking into the culture of West Asheville. If staying in West Asheville, use the Ingle's grocery on Haywood as a reference point. Happy planning to all travellers!
