How safe and connected is Marseille St Charles TGV Train Station on a Saturday night around 21h45?

Hi! I'm visiting Marseille for the first time together with my little son Merlin. We're arriving rather late at St Charles and I'm wondering whether its better to 1/ find a host for 1 night near the train station? 2/ move on with public transport to a host in a nicer neighboorhood?

We're travelling light & fast. (No Buggy, just a backpack and a carrier for the baby). Thanks so much for your advice! L

Hi! The train Station Marseille Saint Charles is very safe whatever time you are travelling at night, you really dont need to worry about security! (By the way, due to the "vigipirate" plan, the police and the army are roaming around in the station every hours of every day...) Its up to you, both choices seem quite fine to me!

Hi, the train station itself is safe, as written by Chetna. The area around it, especially to the north has a bit of bad reputation even though I never had any problems there myself. At that time of day there is limited bus services (the night plan) but the métro still leaves every ten minutes from the station just until after midnight. Have a look at http://www.rtm.fr/en which is the English version of the public transport company of Marseille , which will shows you how to get around at any given hour. Have fun in Marseille!

Hello Lara, Marseille is a large harbour and as for most big cities by night, you should be careful as a foreigner ( not to have your things stolen and not to wander anywhere) . But even though, Marseille is noisy and intimidating, it is safe and each district has its own charm and authenticity. Unfortunately, I won't be home on Saturday. Have a good trip !

Hi there Lare! I lived nearby in a roommate, 10 min walk from the train station. My roommates and I (men and women) never had any troubles! We hearded about it, that's why first I was doing carefully! But now I would say that there is only bad talkers who keep the reputation. :)

Hello Lara, As any big city, Marseille is not the safer place possible ... A lot of people from very different origine, poverty, harbor, ... every characteristics typical for having troubles by night ... but in the middle of the afternoon also ! Two months ago, 2 young ladies (20 and 21 yo) have been killed in front of the St Charles train station. But it happened also in Nice on 14th July, or in Paris, or even in New York last week ... terrorism is everywhere now ! The station itself (inside) is safe, but keep your precious belongings in a closed pack under your shirt, just in case ... If you have a young child, it should be better because people respect more families and women with children. But for women in general, there is no way not to have a lot of "bad" proposals along the street in Marseille ... asking for your phone number, etc... The area around the ST Charles station is not very nice, but useful if you have to take an other train the next day. The best if you find a CS in Marseille is to ask her/him to pick you up at the station : if you arrive late, it should be possible for her/him. There is beautiful area in Marseille. Avoid using the metro by night to go in an other part of the city : the metro is not safe by night. You can also decide to stop in Aix which is nicer and safer, and take a train within the St Charles station to reach this city. It is 30 minutes from Marseille by train or bus. But it's not along the sea ... La Ciotat is nice too and along the sea with a station with trains arriving from Marseille. Check also if your TGV train stops in Aix station before arriving in Marseille : it is the case for on train out of 2 ... And in such case you can stop before arriving in Marseille ... Anyway, have fun in our region, Aix or Marseille : two beautiful cities to discover ! Chuss ... Olivier
