Not since World War II have there been so many people displaced by war. Over half of all the refugees are children, with the majority being under twelve years old. Although Germany has been more welcoming than most other countries, the sheer number of refugees has led to a breakdown of basic provisions, while Germany's future commitment to the refugees remains uncertain. But if we do not meet the all the needs of the refugees especially when it comes to war trauma, the negative impacts on those kids, their families and the communities they call home will go on for years. Play is a fundamental form of therapy for children traumatized by war. Now, imagine if we repurposed, reclaimed and recycled materials including those taken from the battleground so refugee kids and German kids could create and build a playground to dream and envision a new reality beyond their surroundings together.
