Now: Had some great experiences surfing with hosts, as well as hosting some surfers Before: Because I've heard good stories of people getting new friends and having a good time, also I would prefer meeting and getting to know new people or families in other countries, not just look around as stereotypical tourists (although I of course do that as well).
