Amsterdam

Couchsurfing in Amsterdam often means hosts handing guests a bike within the first day and leading them along the canals to a neighborhood well outside the main tourist strip. De Pijp is a favorite base, home to the Albert Cuyp Market and a dense mix of bars and restaurants at a livelier price point than the center. Jordaan offers a quieter, postcard-pretty alternative with narrow canal streets and independent shops. Oost, further east, is more residential and multicultural, with lower prices and a growing food scene. Amsterdam's city center has become notably expensive for accommodation, driven partly by tourism pressure the city has actively tried to manage, which makes Couchsurfing a genuine budget travel option and hostel alternative, letting travelers save on a bed while getting a local's take on the city beyond the Red Light District. Connecting with a host matters here because Amsterdam's neighborhoods each have distinct character that a short central-area visit tends to miss entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best time of year to visit Amsterdam?

Spring (April to May) brings tulip season and mild weather, while summer (June to August) offers the warmest days and longest daylight but also the biggest crowds. Fall is quieter and pleasant for biking. Winter is cold and often grey, though canal-side lights and a cozier café culture make it charming in its own way.

Is Amsterdam safe for travelers?

Yes, Amsterdam is generally very safe, with low rates of violent crime toward tourists. The main things to watch for are bicycle traffic, which moves fast and has its own right of way, and petty theft in crowded areas like the center or on trams, so staying alert while biking and with belongings matters.

Is Couchsurfing a good hostel alternative in Amsterdam?

Yes. Amsterdam's central hostel and hotel prices have climbed as the city manages heavy tourist demand, so Couchsurfing's free stay is a genuine money-saver, plus a host who can point you toward De Pijp or Oost instead of the pricier, more crowded center.

What neighborhoods should travelers explore or stay in, in Amsterdam?

De Pijp has the Albert Cuyp Market and a lively bar scene at reasonable prices. Jordaan is quieter and picturesque, with narrow canal streets. Oost is more residential and multicultural, with lower costs. Amsterdam is extremely bike-friendly, and most visitors get around the city that way rather than by car.

What's the traveler and local community like in Amsterdam?

Bike-centric and direct in a friendly way. Hosts often hand guests a bike and lead them through a neighborhood outside the main tourist center, treating a casual canal ride as the default way to spend time together. It's a community that values getting outside and moving rather than sitting still.

Important: In Amsterdams I get on weekly base lots of requests. Request without my password will be declined. Hosting means connection so that means I expect you have read my profile! CURRENT MISSION Made in 2018 one of my most important decisions in my life in the last 5 years: stop work and start traveling. From 1 October 2018 I started a full-time travel life. Since that moment I am traveling for 9 months all over the world and 3 month interval in my homecountry. Just see family and friends. This trips have learned me a lot and I will go on with my full-time travel life. Every year round Oktober/November I start again. So sometimes I can be host and sometimes I like to be your guest. Since I live in Amsterdam I get so many requests. To organize that : -Sending requests: not longer then 10 days before the dates you would like to stay: other requests I just cancel. -Sending requests: Send me the password you can find in my profile. No password: I just cancel. The reason why I added this last sentence is that I like to host a lot because I like to have connection with people, making new friends. Too many people just send messages without even reading my profile. So at least tell me why you want to stay with me. Remember you stay with someone for free, someone opens his house for you. So treat that with respect! ABOUT ME Easy going guy, love other people , other culture, starting with spiritual things in my live. I like very much to meet people from abroad or being abroad. I like to learn from them, to understand, to have discussions with about every subject. Like to drink a wine or a beer with my guest and even cook together the local dishes. I am an easy going guy, i am open-minded to all kinds of people, race, sexuality, sexe. Everyone has his own important story to tell. In general I host people who like to stay with someone because of the connection. If it is just a place to sleep you are looking for, go then elsewhere. Couchsurfing is for me all about the encounters. If you are new on Couchsurfing and you have a good profile, I will host you. I know very well my own start when I did not have references. It was tough, so I always will give a helping hand to people who are new in couchsurfing. But … at least always have a filled profile. Empty profile requests will not be answered by me. Currently not hosting, but happy to meet up ABOUT ME Hi there! My name is Bert, born and raised in the Netherlands. Last years I traveled quiet some countries and I love to travel low budget and very basic. In my last trip I traveled from the Netherlands to Japan, without the use of an airplane. Through Asia, Middle East and Eastern Europe I made my way back home, with minimal use of airplanes. After I flew to Kenya and did backpacking to South Africa, since everybody told me backpacking and Africa does not fit very well (it actually does). March 2017 was a change of life and since then I am back in the Netherlands and working a lot to save for a new trip. The reason to travel is to explore and experience different cultures, places, weather, food, etc. My interests are in nature, food, sports, music, history and even the politics of other countries/cultures. I enjoy places that are far away from tourists beat paths and represent local life and culture. In the Netherlands I work as a technical consultant in IT projects. Mostly I make sure the business aligns with the IT or I work on preparation for migrating business applications to different platforms. I take care of planning, people and keeping management of organization busy. My main goal is always to create a optimal balance between the goal of project and the enjoyment of work as for me as for the project members or colleagues.

I'm an easy-going gay man who likes to meet people from all over the world. I consider myself a friendly guy who's open to learn about new things and other cultures. I prefer to host men. Sou um homem gay tranquilo, simpático e aberto a conhecer pessoas do mundo todo. Prefiero hospedar a hombres. PHILOSOPHY I know it may not sound very original, but it's true: treat others the way you want to be treated. We're not alone on this planet, and it's amazing how a small gesture can truly make someone's day!

Instagram: @backpackerfromamsterdam My name is Richard and i can say i have quite some experience with couchsurfing🤪 Mostly good till amazing experiences. More about that later. Sadly also some bad ones.😅😅 But if you bring your dog there is a high chance to be accepted😍🤪 and then it is guaranteed a great experience. I am convinced that from everybody you can learn something and even if you dont feel a strong connection with your surfer/host you can still have a good time together because at least you love the same thing as in travelling and experience a new culture, otherwise you shouldnt be a member here 🤭🤭 During a cs experience things can go very different then expected. For me it made my life richer. The good experiences i had nobody cant take them away from me ever. Bad experiences are situations you learn from but i will always still have trust in people in general😁 As you probably noticed i hosted a lot of people. A big part of them will leave your life even if you just had a good memorable time together. And that is fine you know. There are also people who you will talk to once in a while. But the beauty of cs is you will also meet people who become (amazing) friends. Friends that you will reguraly talk with or even see eachother at least once every year even if they live far. The other part of what i like and in the beginning not realised is about things thats normal to me.... can be very special to someone else. For example i showed a surfer a beach and the sea.... but in his country they only have mountains. Its amazing to share such things and see that happy face. Another story is about an mexican couple. I helped the guy with his proposal for his gf. She didnt know about it. It was great doing that and a few months later i went to the wedding in mexico and it was amazing. I had people here who cried when they had to leave🥹🥹because they had such a great time. It melts my heart🤗🤭 So my point is if you are really on cs to share culture, time, food and stories... you are on the right place and it probably will be the most memorable time😊 I think about 70 percent of the requests are copy paste messages. From one side i can understand it takes time to write an interesting request. But i really can tell you that your chances to be accepted are much higher with 5 requests thats written from your heart and more personal then 20 requests thats just copy paste😅😅 (Hidden question to check if you read my profile or not😋😋 so also use this in your request🤭: what is the difference between netherlands and holland or is there no difference?) If you cant speak english or dutch.... please tell me on forehand. As host you will feel fooled when you get an interesting request in english while you cant speak any word in real life (yes it happened a few times😅) Also for the women on this app.... carefull with some hosts here. I am sure you can have a great time with most guys on cs.... there is also a group of hosts who only want to meet girls. They should be banned from this app😅😅 they ruin the experience and the fade in cs for you. An advice.... look for hosts with more reviews and best would be to even contact one or 2 girls he hosted and ask her experience with him. Because i noticed from people i hosted they still are afraid to write a bad review because they are afraid of getting a bad one back. But the goal is really to warn others for coming bad experieces😊 A bit about me... my passport says i am dutch. I am not fully convinced☺️😋 or at least i am not the typical dutch except my tallnes and the fact i like dutch food. But different then most dutch i dont drink coffee, i dont like cheese (unless melted on pasta) and barely drink beer (or other alcohol) I dont plan my daily life so full😋 and you dont have to make an appointment in advance to meet me😉 If i have time i love to show you around, lets cook/eat together, share our (travel)stories. Lets make new memories😍 I often get the question from the surfer i accepted to stay about what they can bring for me as a thank you gift. Let me say first... i dont expect anything. But if you really want to bring something.... maybe you can bring a nice showergel, comfortable toiletpaper or other things like that because i dont give much about alcohol ,sweets/chocolates. So its nicer to get something what also my surfers will use anyway😉 and well. Life got expensive enough anyway🫣🫣 I think i talked enough for now but maybe will meet you soon🤗
