With the draught atm, is it a good idea to visit South Africa this summer or should we go somewhere else?

Hi all, A friend and I want to go to Africa the first time this summer, and South Africa would be our first choice. But with the draught we're not sure if we would be wasting water that's urgently needed by the local population. Or maybe the country still needs tourism now more than ever? Does anybody have some insight or advice here? I'd be very grateful =X

Hi,

The only area that has strict water restrictions is Cape Town - Day Zero has been pushed till 2019 in Cape Town. Obviously, we need to use water sparingly throughout the country. Summer is quite a while away, so it will probably be best to check closer to November.

There is a lot more to South Africa than just Cape Town, so even if they implement stricter restrictions, you could still limit your stay in Cape Town.

The Western Cape is the only area that is badly affected, enough for you to consider not going there. Kwa Zulu Natal and many other areas are still perfect to visit. I hope you get to come to South Africa!

Thank you both so much for your answers! That sounds really different from what I read in German newspapers (where I got the impression that the whole country is affected), so I think we will try to go to South Africa after all. We were thinking about travelling around a bit, so we will definitiely look at Kwa Zulu Natal and other regions that are not as affected by the restrictions as Cape Town. If anybody has any recommendations for towns or cities that you like and that are not (badly) affected by the draught, we'd be quite grateful :))
