Safe places in Marseille ?
Hi ! I'll be in Marseille with my girl in the first days of August . Can you suggest me the safest places where to stay ? I mean, I'm reading Marseille it's not the best place to live in the night if you're a tourist. Any suggestion ?

Marseille is not so dangerous as the television shows. You just have got to take care about your value, like in all big cities. You can stay without any troubles in Endoume, le Panier, la Plaine, Notre Dame du Mont, les Chartreux... there is a lot of nice and safe places.
I agree with Michel, just be as careful as you would be in any big city, but there is nothing to fear.
May be just avoid La belle de Mai at night but downtown and/or places close to the sea, you'll be fine. Marseille does not deserve the awfull reputation it's got. Bad guys do their bisiness between them... And it is a lovely city, with many things to do and see, and not only the Mucem !
HI Licepcep, Nicely said Bad guys do their business betn them ;-) as they always do .. If you can write or point in direction what other things can be done as would be spending around a week ....also how are the parking optionss if coming by car

I do not agree...Marseille is not safe. France is a very nice country but avoid this place, nothing special to do exept the sea. It's dirty polluted and run by mob guys. Yaky city. Don't trust local chovinistics.

Haha! Stay in bandol! Marseille is JUST GREAT and safer than many big french cities... Im leaving here since 17y now, never been in trouble !
Ridiculous. I discovered Marseille on year ago and it is very different of that kind of advice. I have to add that People in Marseille are really openminded and helpful. They are as beautiful and various than their city.

I'm living in the center of Marseille. I had maybe more than 200 guests ... There was just one girl with her wallet stolen... Nothing else.
Is it enough safe ?
Hi Gabriele ! As in most cities , and for having gone around a lot in Marseille in my youth and as a young lady, the areas that are the most dangerous are the empty areas at night ! As long as you have people in the street at night ( which is not the case in a huge part of the south and bourgeois parts of the city ) I think , except little stealings, you are safe. Marseille is a HUMAN city, whith all its flaws, it is a boiling city, with some crowded parts, dirt, noise but ALIVE !! People in Marseille communicate, talk to each other and if you fall in the street people stop to come and help you , obvious behaviour that is not that obvious in our modern contexts...:-( in my opinion that is why it is really a city that people are shared at that point about, some are just enthousiatic about the boiling city, some just can't bear it. For sure there are little assh....... that you can guess at the first glance that they are seaking nothing but problems , those you just have to avoid and keep on walking. Voilà ! in the most wellknown area to go party ( La plaine/ cours julien) I guess the worst you can meet would be really drunk or so... people ! Sabine Marseille / quartiers Nord... NB : If I have a quiet and lively advice to give, i would say Vieux Port on the city hall side, which I love for being a quiet magic bubble and close to restaurants, seaside and so on...
HAHA... one thing is, most of the big cities are crazy, not only marseille.
With is multicultural problems, social chaos, les boutiques avec montres pour 10 milles euros etc.
But it is sunny and Sea is beautiful, and most of the france is messy now, France will sink soon ( Economy ).
Of course, not only France. But this is the melting pot...

I lived in Paris and London for while and now that I live in Marseille, I can tell that the dangerousness of this city was a big lie. The truth is that most French people mindlessly hate Marseille, as a consequence, medias need to talk about Marseille in a way that fulfill this hate of the city. The population of Marseille is very different from the countryside of France, so if you're not terrorized by the sight of colored people, you'll be fine. Like every big city, don't showoff your expressive camera and phone in the middle of the crowd.
