whats to be seen in your state (hitchhiking trip)

Dear CS Members,

I am staying in NY last 2 weeks so far and trying to safe some $$ for road (hitchhiking) trip around USA. I hitched around 50.000km on 3 continents already as you can see from my profile. I want to start the trip in NY in 1 or maximum 2 months. I want to ma big circle but I don't know yet if I will start South or North. I have to be back in NY in July for plane back home. Theoretically its going to be March, April, May and Jun then.

At this moment I am searching for information what places should I visit when I pass your state. What is that I should not leave without seeing or doing? Generally I want to skip big cities.

I will look for couches on the way so if you have one spare few square meters on your floor please let me know. I am also ready for Wwoofing.

Music is what many people come to Mississippi to experience. The Delta is full of blues joints some good some not so good. Just look up info on the Mississippi Blues Trail and you'l probably find an interesting path through Mississippi. There is also the Natchez Trace which runs from Nashville to Natchez but none of it goes through the Delta which is a must see. So I would take the trace down from Nashville to Tupelo (birthplace of Elvis Presley) and head west to Oxford. Oxford is a nice town to visit and has lots of writers from all over the world who go and try to find themselves there. Its not that far off the trace if you leave from Tupelo and a good point to head west into the Delta. Once in the Delta you can follow a lot of the blues trail down to Natchez, Mississippi a town with a lot of Antebellum homes and you can keep going south through Louisiana from there and you'll find more beautiful old plantation homes and interesting small towns on the way to New Orleans.

I hope you have a good trip through our state and you'll find us a place with lots of history and culture that's good, bad and a work in progress. Overall Mississippians are a bunch of nice folks that show a level of hospitality you won't find anywhere else in the states.
