Welcome to Ft.Myers Marvin! Just like any city, FTM has lots of different character. There are some 1 bedrooms and studios downtown above the shops, as well as larger units. ( Patio de Leon and Bradford House i think they are called). I've never been there but the location is great. Quality on Ft. Myers Beach can be questionable but there are places that are great- just depends on your budget. Being by the water is nice right? That would be a further drive from most places to work. Do you know where that will be? Cape Coral has a variety of apartments and homes on canals for various rents. There is little in the way of shops or entertainment though. Plenty of restaurants, however! Estero is a busy area and colorful during school, as our local university is there. It's about 20-30 minutes away from Ft.Myers technically, but to most of us- it's still Ft.Myers. If you have any further details like what area of town you might work or what your max rent is, I'll be happy to help you further.
If you're just going by rent prices, LeHigh Acres has a lot of rentals, but the town has poor layout. You'd almost always be going to Ft Myers, Estero, Bonita Springs or Naples for entertainment or restaurants. Cape Coral is not as bad as LeHigh Acres, but it is spread out over a large area, and you'd likely have to pay the $2 toll daily to cross the river to get back to CC if you work in Fort Myers. I live in North Fort Myers which has a rural feel, but I'm a homebody during the week, so that's fine.
I think Ft Myers, Estero, and Bonita Springs are good places to live. If you're working in Fort Myers, then I would suggest living closer to Ft Myers and not forcing yourself to commute on I-75 is highly recommended. Based on your interests, I think living close to downtown Ft Myers is what you'd like best. There's some small houses, townhouses and apartments you could rent that wouldn't be super expensive.
I hope this helps!
If you're ok with being around the Fort Myers area and not exactly IN the area, check out Pine Island.
