mochilero vegano Aleman en Mexico / German vegan backpacker in Mexico

hey guys,

I will be backpacking through Mexico starting in about a week and working my way all the way down to Panama.

I know that Mexico has some great vegan restaurants and it's also easy to find information on vegan food in big supermarkets.

But I wonder what street food or food along side the road in between towns and truck stops can I eat?

how do I know if something is made with lard, butter, eggs or dairy?

I feel that it's always easy to ask for cheese, fish or meat in food but people might not think or know off any other non-vegan ingredients in the food.

Tamales are 50% Made with pork Grease (wich is a bomb for vegans) and 50% vegetal grease wich is ok, you should always ask 2-3 times as they use to lie depending on what they think you might like, most small cities and towns do not have vegetarian restaurants but you can always head for the local "mercado" plenty of options always there, when in México city you should try "Nirvana" "siempre vegana" "yug" restaurants , good trip!

thanks for the advice on the Tamales and your recommendation. I also heard that the refried beans are done with lard and that at cheaper places they use chicken stock for the rice. I will definitely check the local mercados and I'll mostly rely on fruits and veggies.
